NAV CANADA controller training and salary
What happens after you are selected — training length for area control centre and tower streams, training pay, and licensed salary ranges as NAV CANADA publishes them.
NAV CANADA publishes its training durations and pay in more detail than most air navigation service providers, which makes this one of the few parts of ATC selection where you can plan against real numbers.
Figures below are as published by NAV CANADA for 2026 and are quoted in Canadian dollars. Pay scales are revised, so verify against NAV CANADA’s own careers pages before making a decision on them.
Two streams, two lengths
| Area control centre | Tower | |
|---|---|---|
| Training length | About 20–27 months | About 12–18 months |
| Where you work | An area control centre | An assigned tower location |
| Licensed salary range (2026) | About $143,513 – $207,450 | About $104,258 – $207,450 |
You do not simply choose your stream. Placement follows operational need and how you perform in training, and NAV CANADA requires willingness to relocate as an eligibility condition — which is a real commitment, not a box to tick.
Training pay
Training is paid and full-time. NAV CANADA publishes a starting rate of about $58,606, rising to about $61,337 after one year of training, before the substantial step up on licensing.
The gap between training pay and licensed pay is the shape of the whole career: a long, demanding, well-supported apprenticeship followed by a salary that reflects how few people complete it.
Training is a gate, not a formality
This is the part candidates most often skip past. Selection gets you into training; it does not get you a licence. NAV CANADA states plainly that meeting the pre-employment conditions does not guarantee training completion, licensing or employment.
Controller training washes people out everywhere in the world, and it does so late — after months of paid, full-time work. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to arrive with the underlying abilities genuinely trained rather than just sufficient to pass a screen.
What comes with the job
- Shift work, including nights and weekends. Traffic does not keep office hours.
- Ongoing medical certification. It is not a one-off at hiring.
- Relocation, potentially more than once.
- Continuous assessment. Validation on a position is not the end of being checked.
