One of the five ability areas NATS names

Numerical reasoning test practice

Numerical ability here is speed and accuracy under pressure rather than mathematical depth. Two formats dominate: interpreting a table or chart and judging a statement against it, and rapid mental arithmetic with no calculator.

A strong maths background helps less than people expect. These tests reward working cleanly at pace and knowing when an estimate is enough — habits that are trainable in a way that mathematical knowledge is not.

Where the marks go

Percentage change against a base is where most marks are lost. Comparing absolute change instead of percentage is the substitution a hurried candidate makes, and the items are designed around it.

Sample question

Numerical Reasoning

Read the table, then judge the statement. This is the format used across NATS Stage 1, FEAST I and the ATSA.

Airport2024 passengers2025 passengers
Northfield4.2m4.9m
Eastport6.8m6.5m
Westhaven2.1m2.6m

Statement: “Northfield's passenger numbers grew by a larger percentage than Westhaven's between 2024 and 2025.”

Sample question

Mental Arithmetic

One value is missing. Choose the digit that makes the equation true — no calculator, and the real test speeds up as you get them right.

7 × □ + 4 = 39
