3D Cubes

Fold it in your head

A flat cube net is shown with symbols on its faces — work out which of four folded cubes it makes. Symbol orientation counts as well as position. Mental manipulation of 3D objects — spatial awareness as NATS and the ATSA assess it.

What to expect

  • A cube net with symbols on four of its six faces.
  • Four folded cubes to choose between, only one consistent.
  • Instant green/red feedback, then it moves on by itself.
  • Distractors that differ only in which face a symbol sits on, or which way up it is.

What it measures

  • Spatial visualisation
  • Mental manipulation of 3D shapes
  • Working under time pressure

Instructions

  1. 1Fix one face as your reference, then work round from it.
  2. 2Track adjacent faces rather than trying to fold the whole net at once.
  3. 3Check orientation too — a symbol on the right face but turned the wrong way is still wrong.
  4. 4Rule out options on a single contradicting face.

Tips

  • Faces two apart along a net's row end up opposite each other, so they can never be seen together.
  • Practise until you can eliminate on one face alone.
What the task looks like

3D Cubes

A flat cube net with symbols on its faces, and four folded cubes to choose between. Only one is consistent with the net — and symbol orientation counts as well as position.

Mental manipulation of 3D objects. The distractors differ only in which face a symbol sits on or which way up it is, so the item punishes anyone who folds the net roughly and then guesses.
