Rule Classification

Sort by colour, shape or size — while the rule changes

EUROCONTROL's "assign objects to categories" exercise. Put the object in the Item box into the right category. Three rules rotate: classify objects by colour, by shape, or classify numbers by size — and the app tells you when the categories change. Sometimes a message overrides the rule ("classify green shapes as blue"), and if an identical object appears in the Pair item box, Pair beats everything.

What to expect

  • An Item box, a Pair item box, and a row of category boxes underneath.
  • The active categories change during the run — colours (3 boxes), shapes or number ranges (4 boxes).
  • A standing message can override the colour rule until it is replaced.
  • An identical pair overrules both the rules and the message.

What it measures

  • Rule switching
  • Resisting interference
  • Holding an instruction while working

Instructions

  1. 1Read the banner first: it tells you when the categories change and carries any standing message.
  2. 2Check the Pair item box. If it holds the same object as the Item box, click Pair and move on.
  3. 3Otherwise apply the message if one is up, and the current rule if not.

Tips

  • The pair check is the cheapest one to make, so make it first — it settles the answer outright.
  • A message stays live until it is replaced. Most errors are people applying a message that has already gone, or missing one that just arrived.

Rule Classification

EUROCONTROL's rule classification exercise. A rule decides which of two groups an object belongs to — and the rule changes without being announced.

The current rule sorts by SHAPE, not colour. A red triangle, a blue triangle and a red circle have already been sorted: both triangles went left, the circle went right. A blue circle now appears. Where does it go?
