Instrument Recall

Learn the readings, then pick them out

EUROCONTROL's "remember instrument readings" exercise. A panel of between three and six instruments appears — dials, thermometers, clocks, compasses, batteries and speed signs — and you have a few seconds to learn what each one reads. The panel then disappears and you are asked about each instrument in turn, choosing its reading from four options.

What to expect

  • Three to six instruments per panel, scattered rather than lined up.
  • A short study window, shown as a bar running down.
  • One question per instrument, four options each.
  • The wrong options are near neighbours on the same scale, not wild guesses.

What it measures

  • Short-term visual memory
  • Reading instruments accurately at speed
  • Holding several values at once

Instructions

  1. 1Read each instrument as a value, not a picture — "thirty degrees", "quarter past eight".
  2. 2Say the readings to yourself in a fixed order; a short list is far easier to hold than a scattered image.
  3. 3Where an instrument sits on the panel is a cue in itself — use it to keep the readings apart.
  4. 4Do not linger on one instrument; an unread instrument scores nothing at all.

Tips

  • Panels grow from three instruments to six as you get them right, so early accuracy is what earns the harder rounds.
  • The options are deliberately close together — one step up or down the scale — so a vague impression will not survive. Commit to the exact value.
What the task looks like

Instrument Recall

A panel of instrument readings is shown for a fixed study period, then taken away. You then pick out the readings you saw from a set of near-identical alternatives.

Memory for detail with no meaning attached to it — you cannot reason your way to a value you did not encode. The alternatives differ by small amounts, so recognising the general shape of a dial is not enough. This is the exercise where a deliberate encoding strategy, rather than staring harder, makes the difference.
