Left / Right

Whose left are we talking about?

EUROCONTROL's "distinguish left and right" exercise. You are told one shape to find, then shown a figure with a shape beyond each arm, and must say which of the FIGURE'S arms it is on — not which side of the screen. The figure appears facing towards you or away, upright or upside down, near or far, and each of those flips the answer.

What to expect

  • One target shape announced at the start and used for the whole run.
  • A figure in a room, sometimes facing you, sometimes turned away, sometimes upside down.
  • Two buttons — Left and Right — answered as fast as you can manage.
  • The shapes turn with the figure, so an inverted figure shows an inverted triangle.

What it measures

  • Taking someone else's point of view
  • Mental rotation under time pressure
  • Resisting your own frame of reference

Instructions

  1. 1Find the face. It is the only thing telling you which way the figure is turned, and the answer depends on it.
  2. 2Facing you, the figure's left arm is on YOUR right. Facing away, you share its sides.
  3. 3Upside down flips the answer again — so a figure facing you AND inverted has its left arm back on your left.
  4. 4Do not talk yourself round in circles. Settle the facing first, then the orientation, then answer.

Tips

  • The reliable trick is to imagine turning yourself to stand as the figure stands, rather than trying to mirror it in your head.
  • Speed matters as much as accuracy here, and the two perspectives that catch people are away-and-upright (which feels wrong but shares your sides) and toward-and-inverted.
Sample question

Left / Right

Left/Right. The whole exercise is one question asked repeatedly: whose left are we talking about?

An aircraft symbol on the display is pointing towards the bottom of your screen. Something appears on the aircraft's right-hand side. Where is it from where you are sitting?
