Visual Comparison

Identical or not — decide fast

EUROCONTROL's "scan and compare figures" exercise. A figure sits in the lower box, with one or two figures above it. If the lower figure is identical to at least one of them, answer Equal; if it matches none, answer Unequal. Every figure is the same diamond with different internal lines, and they usually differ by a single line — so it is a scanning speed test, not a puzzle.

What to expect

  • Two boxes on top — sometimes one is empty, never both.
  • One figure below, and two answers: Equal or Unequal.
  • Differences are usually a single internal line.

What it measures

  • Perceptual speed
  • Visual scanning under time pressure
  • Accuracy when working fast

Instructions

  1. 1Compare the lower figure with the figure(s) above it.
  2. 2Identical to at least one of them → Equal.
  3. 3Identical to none of them → Unequal.

Tips

  • Pick one feature and check it across all the figures — the centre spokes, then the small diamond — rather than trying to take each figure in as a whole.
  • When two figures are shown above, the match is as often the second as the first. Do not settle after checking one.
Sample question

Visual Comparison

Visual comparison. Two figures, one judgement, made as fast as you can — repeated far past the point where it stays interesting.

You are comparing two figures that each carry four elements. Three elements match exactly. The fourth is the same shape and the same colour, but sits one position further right in the second figure. Identical or not?
