Situational Judgement

Judge the most effective response

NATS Stage 2 pairs a Situational Judgement Test with a listening test, both proctored online by Aon. The SJT assesses, in NATS's own words, "how you evaluate possible responses to workplace situations". You read a realistic scenario from a safety-critical operation and choose the response you judge most effective — then see the reasoning behind every item.

What to expect

  • A short workplace scenario, then four possible responses.
  • Pick the one you judge MOST effective — one answer per item.
  • No technical ATC knowledge is needed or assumed.
  • Full reasoning for every scenario once the run finishes.

What it measures

  • Judgement in safety-critical situations
  • Knowing when to speak up, and to whom
  • Balancing procedure, pace and teamwork

Instructions

  1. 1Read the whole scenario before looking at the responses.
  2. 2Ask what a safe, professional colleague would actually do — not what sounds most decisive.
  3. 3Prefer resolving a doubt at source over waiting for evidence.
  4. 4There's no clock pressure: an SJT measures judgement, not speed.

Tips

  • Watch for options that are right in principle but escalate too far, too fast — they're usually second best, not best.
  • Doing nothing, or waiting to see what happens, is almost never the strongest response in a safety-critical setting.
  • NATS publishes no mark scheme for this. Our answers are keyed to accepted safety-critical principles and explained, so you can disagree knowingly.
Sample question

Situational Judgement

A workplace situation from a safety-critical operation, then four possible responses. No ATC knowledge needed — Stage 2 candidates have not been trained yet.

You are under training on a live position. A pilot reads back a clearance and you are not certain the readback matched what you issued. Your supervisor is occupied with another position. Which response would be the MOST effective?
