Spatial Orientation — Bearings

Where am I, and which way?

Read a Direction Indicator (a heading) and a Relative Bearing Indicator (the needle points to a beacon), then make two picks — the heading shown, and the tile giving the position relative to the beacon. Commit both to answer. Bearing work of this kind sits under spatial awareness in NATS Stage 1 and recurs throughout FEAST.

What to expect

  • A Direction Indicator (heading) and a Relative Bearing Indicator (needle to the beacon).
  • Pick the plane pointing your way, and the tile where you are relative to the beacon.
  • Commit both selections; a Hint reveals the answers but voids the leaderboard.

What it measures

  • Spatial orientation from instruments
  • Reading heading and bearing instruments
  • Relating a position to a beacon by bearing

Instructions

  1. 1Read your heading off the top of the Direction Indicator (N/E/S/W).
  2. 2The RBI needle shows the beacon relative to your nose — add it to your heading to get the beacon's true direction.
  3. 3You sit on the opposite (reciprocal) side of the beacon — pick that tile, and the plane matching your heading.

Tips

  • Beacon directly ahead (needle up) means you are directly behind it.
  • Your tile is always the reciprocal of the beacon's direction from you.
Sample question

Spatial Orientation — Bearings

Read the two instruments, then place yourself relative to the beacon. This is the item type that separates candidates more than any other in the spatial group.

Your heading indicator reads 270°. The bearing needle points 45° to the right of your nose. Where are you in relation to the beacon?
